I provide the options above because they all use open protocols. What this means is that anyone can host, provide or use them and they are not controlled by a single, centralised entity. This is the opposite of closed-source, proprietary communication platforms and social media, which can lock you out whenever they like and can manipulate what you see and who you communicate with, for their own purposes.

As society becomes more and more dependent on and enmeshed in the internet and digital technology, the more important it becomes that we choose to retain control over it and freedom within it.
