As well as being a photographer, I'm also a musician and songwriter.

When I left home and moved to Brighton, and tried to make my own way in the professional world, I decided to go with photography rather than music.

But I ended up meeting myself halfway, photographing musicians.

It worked out quite well because I was young and inexperienced; so rather than referring to what was trending or established (i.e doing market research) I just vibed off the music of the people who wanted me to shoot artwork for them.

And I listened to what they told me about it.

We drank a lot of wine and talked about philosophy and art a lot and every time I did a shoot I got several banger pictures for them.

We usually became friends too.

Because I was doing it cheap and people liked my style, word about me spread around the Brighton music scene. I had a lot of work coming in and I started to dream about being a full-time photographer; a *professional* even, and quitting my day job.

And towards the end I kind of got there.
I was getting paid properly too, but by then it was because I was being hired by labels and management; not musicians themselves. They had the money, for sure, but they didn't seem to understand where the music came from. I don't think some of them even really listened to it properly.
The vibe was off.

I got spooked and left to go travelling and wait for a time when I could figure out how to work again with integrity and passion.

That time is now.

Working for artists is different than working for business, even though an artist is usually also in business.

What I've learnt from experience, is that trying to make art conform to narrow definitions of ‘what is good’, set by markets and other artists, just isn't worth it. It fails to succeed and it fails to be good. Following a formula doesn't seem to work.

You need to have faith in yourself and you need other people who are on board with your art.

You need to be bold.

If you work with me you can expect a genuine interest in where you're coming from - no formulas or preconceptions.

If you let me in to your creative world I'll be with you 100% in translating and expressing it in photographs. I'll get your vibe and help you take it out there.

We are, after all, artists.
